Johan Dalene

Still in his mid-teens, Johan Dalene is already making an impression on the international music scene and has won First Prize at no fewer than eight international competitions. This season he has appeared as a soloist with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra in Sweden, with the Sandnes Symphony Orchestra in Norway, with the Yehudi Menuhin School Orchestra in London and with the St Christopher Chamber Orchestra in Lithuania. Highlights of upcoming engagements in the 2017/18 season includes performances with the Gävle Symphony Orchestra, with the Jönköping Sinfonietta and with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra.

Johan was born in 2000 and began playing the violin at the age of 4 with Päivikki Wirkkala Malmqvist at Norrköpings Kulturskola. Three years later he made his debut as a soloist with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and three years after that he joined the orchestra again for a performance of Pablo de Sarasate’s notoriously difficult Zigeunerweisen. He has performed extensively in the Nordic region and has also appeared in Italy, Austria, Switzerland, South Africa, China and the United Kingdom. He has played at the Musikverein in Vienna and at the Teatro Bibiena in Mantova.

Johan has won First Prizes at multiple international competitions including the Stockholm International Music Competition (Sweden), the Kocian Violin Competition (Czech Republic) and Giovani Talenti (Italy). In 2016 he won Third Prize in the Junior section of the prestigious Menuhin Competition (London), also winning the Chamber Music Award, the Wieniawski Prize and the ECMY Prize for Exceptional Performance.

Johan has been a student-in-residence at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland and has been instructed by some of the most distinguished string players of our time, including Peter Herresthal, Dora Schwarzberg, Mimi Zweig, Alf Richard Kraggerud, Stephan Barratt-Due, Gerhard Schulz, Michael Malmgreen, Olivier Charlier, Ilya Grubert, Pamela Frank and Zakhar Bron. Johan is currently a student at Nordiska Musikgymnasiet in Stockholm.Since 2010, his regular violin teacher has been Per Enoksson, professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

Johan’s repertoire includes solo violin works by Bach, Paganini and Ysaÿe, accompanied sonatas by Beethoven, Brahms, Franck, Grieg, Kreisler, Mozart and concertos by Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Vieuxtemps, Vivaldi, Nielsen and Saint-Saëns, among others. Johan has been awarded a number of scholarships including G.T.Bäckmans Kulturstipendium, Norrköping Kommuns Kulturstipendium and from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

Johan plays on a Nicolò Gagliano violin from 1765 generously on loan from the Henri Moerel Foundation.
